  • An African Experience

Joëlle Rabu Twinned with Malienne Singer

In October of 1999, Joëlle Rabu performed in MALI, AFRICA, participating in a French television documentary profiling the lives and careers of both a Canadian singer and an African singer. Rabu was chosen by Connections Productions, out of Moncton New Brunswick, after being spotted by the show's producer during her month-long 'TONIGHT...PIAF' tour of the Maritimes in August of 1999. The television documentary entitled PASSEPORT MUSIQUE aired nationally on CBC French TV and in various European and French-speaking African countries in the spring of 2000.

In late September of 1999, Malienne singer OUMOU SOUMARÉ, visited Joëlle's home in Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island to get a glimpse of her life and career. With television cameras following the two newly-acquainted singers, Joëlle acted as tour guide for Oumou showing her the beauty of the Canadian west coast. This was Oumou's first trip over an ocean, as Mali lies near the Sahara desert.

Following her Mali tour, Joëlle then travelled to Moncton, NB for the live taping of the show DOUBLE ÉTOILE (Double Star) which invited both Joëlle and her "musical twin", OUMOU SOUMARÉ, to sing together on stage. DOUBLE ÉTOILE also aired in the spring of 2000 in conjunction with the documentary on the lives of the singers.

Even though Joëlle has lived and travelled throughout 30 countries, her trip to Mali was her first visit on the African continent. During her stay with Oumou, the cameras documented Joëlle's visit and also showed the development of a song the two singers started writing upon Oumou's stay in Canada. The song "BANIDÉ" was performed live in Bamako, the capital city of Mali, in front of a highly enthusiastic crowd who witnessed for the first time, a Canadian singing in their native tongue, Bambara. Joëlle was then honoured with a Malienne name, Lala Touré (Touré is the founding family of Bamako) and given a beautiful 'Kora' (a 21-stringed, gourd-type harp), made especially for her.
