J.Douglas Dodd
(Music Director / Arranger / Composer / piano / guitar / accordion)

Whether writing music for theatre, television, concerts, orchestras or film, Doug does it with passion, humour, imagination and honesty. An award-winning composer and Genie nominee, his works have been performed by symphony orchestras, professional choirs, theatre companies and artists across the nation.

In 1993, Doug was commissioned to compose and produce the score for the new Parliament Hill presentation in Ottawa entitled, A Symphony of Sound and Light - Reflections of Canada , which played nightly on the Hill during the summer months for 5 years.

As a performing artist, Doug has toured extensively around the world with Joëlle, with hundreds of performances in venues ranging from concert halls to folk festivals. Since his association with Joëlle in 1983, he has composed most of her original material and he has also recorded and produced her 6 albums.

Charlie Knowles
(bass /cello / mandolin / mando-cello / accordion / banjo / vocals)

A professional musician since 1969, Charlie has played in a wide variety of musical situations, covering concert performance, musical theatre and the recording studio. Recording credits include numerous film scores and CD projects. Although a bassist first and foremost, Charlie has studied cello for over 15 years and he has also been spotted taking turns on other instruments such as mandocello, guitar, mandolin, banjo and accordion.

The last decade has seen Charlie adding music production to his repertoire in the areas of film and album projects. Charlie has been part of Joëlle's performance ensemble since they met in the original Piaf show in 1983, partaking also in all of her recordings as both musician and technical producer/engineer. An accomplished songwriter, Charlie has co-penned several of Joëlle's songs which are featured on her albums Heart of the Night and Passport.

Charlie can also be seen and heard performing with the Canadian folk trio 3 Bricks Shy


Tom Neville
(violin / mandolin / guitar / banjo / side-drum / vocals)

Born and educated in Western Canada, Tom has been a professional musician for many years with an increasingly busy schedule in concerts, theatres, folk festivals and recording studios. After training and performing as a classical violinist in symphony and opera orchestras, he developed an interest and talent for folk, celtic, jazz and pop music.

This musical journey also had Tom exploring and mastering other instruments as well. He has been featured on several of J. Douglas Dodd's film scores and Tom has had the pleasure of playing with many diverse groups across Canada, most notably Fear of Drinking, The Paperboys, Colleen Eccleston and James Keelaghan.

He has been actively performing, recording and writing with Joëlle since 1985 and has had several of his compositions featured on her albums Heart of the Night and Hold Me. He has recently released his first album of original tunes entitled 'Highly Strung' which showcase his amazing fiddle styles. Visit Tom Neville's web site at http://www.tomneville.ca


Dusty Rhodes
(Lighting Designer / Production Manager)

Dusty's first job in theatre was at City Stage where he ran followspot for the production of `PIAF', and later became stage manager/carpenter on tour.

Over the past few years, Dusty has worked every major theatre in Vancouver including EXPO '86's Canada Pavilion where he was crew chief for ballets, orchestras, modern dance and theatre. Over the past few years, Dusty has toured as Technical Director/Lighting Designer with Margot Kane's "Moonlodge", in Australia, Canada and New York. His lighting design for Moonlodge was nominated for a Jessie Award.

Dusty has been lighting designer for Joëlle since 1984 and has had the pleasure and challenge of lighting her shows in concert halls from Banff to Bulgaria.


Phil Posner
(Sound Design / Operator)

Originally from New York, Phil was Speech and Theatre major in college and eventually developed interests in studio engineering. In 1977 he began working for Vancouver's Goldrush Recording Studio and he has since engineered countless albums (including all of Joëlle's) and designed sound for numerous film scores, stage plays and orchestra concerts.

Considered an expert on Charlie Chaplin, Phil participated in and operated sound at a Chaplin symposium in L.A. He continues to write about Chaplin and has published 5 articles and 6 reviews on the subject.

Phil is also a stage employee, performing sound and other technical services at most of the venues around Vancouver. Phil has been part of Joëlle's ensemble since 1983 and continues to design sound for all her shows.


Ray Michal 1937-1991
(Original Concept and Direction of Tonight...Piaf)

Ray co-founded Vancouver's legendary City Stage Lunch Hour Theatre and was its Artistic and Managing Director from 1972 to 1986. During his tenure at City Stage, Ray directed more than 1OO dramas, comedies and musicals including PIAF, HER SONGS, HER LOVES which launched the career of Joëlle Rabu.

Known in the Vancouver theatre community as the "Father of Theatre", Ray enjoyed taking risks on productions, hiring unknown performers, designers and musicians for their talent and not their résumés. Ray has been twice voted Best Director by members of the Vancouver Professional Theatre Alliance and in 1988 he received the prestigious award for Outstanding Achievement.

Tonight...Piaf was Ray's last project before he passed away in 1991 shortly after the Quebec tour of the show. The performances are dedicated to him as a tribute to his passionate love of theatre, his guidance and his talent.
