Joëlle Rabu Biography

"She had never had a singing lesson in her life and never been on stage before, but when she stepped into the spotlight on a tiny stage in May, Joëlle Rabu was creating a new legend in Canadian show business".
(Tim Hanlon, The Arts Magazine-Vancouver, BC
Joëlle Rabu made her debut at City Stage in April, 1983. She found herself caught up in a whirlwind of publicity and praise. A casual remark by her brother was the first link in the chain of events that was to propel her from waitressing to the stage. The late Ray Michal, director of Vancouver's City Stage, had expressed his desire to remount his original play, 'Piaf, Her Songs, Her Loves', but was frustrated in his search for a bilingual singer/actress dynamic enough to play this special role. An audition was arranged and Joëlle sang the three Piaf songs she knew.
Within a month, an incredulous Joëlle began rehearsals. Her transformation from unknown waitress to singing star caught the attention of the media and her thrilling voice and presence won the hearts of all that heard her sing. Audience demand extended 'Piaf' past its initial six week run for month after month. "A star is born" was the unanimous consensus of the media and public.

The show finally closed on its first anniversary after over 400 performances. Joëlle's performance won her two Jessie Awards (plus a third Jessie for Dodd's musical direction) and established her reputation as a chanteuse extraordinaire.

'JOËLLE RABU IN CONCERT' marked her debut as a singer/songwriter in her own right. Powerful, original, storytelling songs, written in collaboration with J. Douglas Dodd, soon became her new trademark.

Joëlle was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, shortly after her parents emigrated from Brittany, France. She grew up in Courtenay, BC, and, at the age of 16, ran away from home to see for herself the faraway lands of which her parents often spoke. After travelling for three years through more than 30 countries, she returned home to Vancouver Island where she now resides. Joëlle's fervent love of life, language and travel comes to life in her stage performances, making her a unique Canadian singer with a cornucopia of emotions and styles upon which to draw when performing a song.

"I enjoy sharing the 'moment' with an audience. My songs are a part of what I witness in my daily life. Every song is a story. It's rarely my own, as I prefer to remain an observer, an interpreter for others. Sometimes it is a celebration of life, sometimes a declaration of fury. Music, for me, is a canvass upon which one can apply strokes of colour and texture which can in turn enhance, provoke, offer release. The final result should be interpreted solely by the viewer, the listener. The feeling should not be dictated, as everyone sees and hears things differently. This difference is the magic of song." Highlights

Joëlle Rabu's success in 'PIAF' gave her recognition throughout the country. After a year at Vancouver's City Stage, portraying this French songstress, Joëlle pursued her acting career. Her theatre credits include: the Shakespeare Plus productions of CABARET, GOODNIGHT DISGRACE and IRMA LA DOUCE; the Arts Club's DON MESSER'S JUBILEE (for which is was nominated for another Jessie Award); the Belfry's LIES AND LEGENDS, THE MUSICAL STORIES OF HARRY CHAPIN; TheatreOne's HOT FLASHES; and the Chemainus Theatre Festival productions of RATS, THE MUSICAL; ANYTHING GOES and MURDER ON THE NILE.

In 1986, Joëlle was chosen to perform at EXPO '86 for International Children's Day where she shared the stage with the late DANNY KAYE, THE PEKING POPS ORCHESTRA and the RUSSIAN CHILDREN'S CHOIR. Leaving the Piaf identity behind, she launched her concert tours of orginal music; receiving standing ovations from audiences across Canada and in places as diverse as Phoenix, Arizona; Beijing, China; London, England; Warsaw, Poland; Belgrade, Yugoslavia; Sofia, Bulgaria and Mali, Africa.

Her album "PASSPORT" was released in early 1987 and she was nominated for a JUNO for BEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR shortly after the release of this LP.

"JOËLLE MAGNIFIQUE IN ANY LANGUAGE" was the headline of the review when she premiered her Orchestral Pops Concert 'MAGIC OF THE MUSIC HALL' with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra in Kitchener, Ontario. This original show broke the traditional pops concert mold as Joëlle and her musicians incorporated theatre with orchestral arrangements. The group went on to perform with orchestras across the nation.

In March of 1988, she released her first French video of her song L'ENFANT in collaboration with Radio-Canada Vancouver.

At the culmination of a very successful 1989 tour of eastern Canada, the Speaker of the House of Commons held a reception at Parliament Hill in Joëlle's honour. Later that same year, Joëlle and her musicians were asked to give a command performance for the DUKE AND DUCHESS OF YORK during the royal visit at Ottawa's NATIONAL ARTS CENTRE.

In the summer of 199O, Joëlle debuted her new play, 'Tonight...Piaf' to rave reviews and standing ovations. This highly acclaimed portrayal of Edith Piaf's last American concert played a successful run at Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Theatre, and continues to be presented in major centres across Canada and the States.

In July of 199O, Joëlle performed at B.C. Place Stadium, accompanied by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, premiering J. Douglas Dodd's new theme song for the B.C. SPECIAL OLYMPICS, 'A Dream Fulfilled', which was later recorded on her Heart of the Night CD.

On May 17th, 1994, Joëlle hosted and performed at the opening ceremony of J. Douglas Dodd's Symphony of Sound and Light - Refelections of Canada  on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

Throughout the past two decades, Joëlle and her musicians have performed their concert, their orchestral pops concert and 'Tonight...Piaf' across B.C., Alberta, Manitoba, the Yukon, Quebec, Ontario, the Maritimes the NWT and the United States. They continue to tour year-round.
